About Robert Redford

A friend and I were talking about movies, and somehow ended up talking about Robert Redford.  I was never a huge fan, but he is a decent enough actor and he made some good movies.  However, as I stated to my friend, he has a long habit of nearly always having a much, much younger leading lady, starting when he was around 50.  My friend objected saying I was wrong, but then we went through a list of of movies, and gradually she began to see it.  Here's the run down:

Let's start with 1984's "The Natural", co-starring Glenn Close, 9 years his junior.  Okay, i'll give him that one.

1985's "Out of Africa", costarring Meryl Streep, 13 years his junior. Okay, still not incriminating, but a pattern begins to emerge...

1986 "Legal Beagles", costarring Debra Winger, 19 years his junior.  Can you see where this is going?

1990 "Havana", costarring Lena Olin, 19 years his junior.

1993 "Indecent Proposal" costarring Demi Moore, 26 years his junior.  Okay, I didn't see this one, but I assume he was playing a creep, so I'll give him another pass.

1996 "Up Close and Personal" costarring Michelle Pfeiffer, 22 years his junior.

1998 "The Horse Whisperer" costarring Kristin Scott Thomas, 24 years his junior.

Then he takes a bunch of years off not making movies with a leading lady, so we jump ahead to

2015 "A Walk in the Woods", costarring Emma Thompson, 23 years his junior.   Come on, a role easily played by an older actress.

It is ridiculous.

Hey, I don't begrudge people in real life having May-December romances if they can make it work. All power to them.  But for an actor like Robert Redford to go out of his way, nearly always, to not have a contemporary leading lady... it grates.  The few times his on-screen wife was near his age, she often only made a cameo appearance.

When Mr Redford finally kicks the bucket, which could happen any year now, I won't be too heart broken.

My only question is, how much input did he have in the casting?

Lucky sod.

That said, he is only 4 years older than Katherine Ross who played his girlfriend in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. And Ms Ross is four years older than Sam Elliott, her co star in Conagher. And Sam Elliott starred in Rough Riders along with Elan Oberon who was the lass who sang Gerryowen and I don't know how old she is but she is a lot prettier than Robert Redford

I imagine quite a lot as he produced many of those films.

 Good point.

An actor with his credentials, I imagine quite a lot and that's the problem.  He could have, but didn't, advocate for older actresses.

Oops, I didn't delete that fast enough.  I was wrong about that.
