Hello everyone,,

I had the chance to see the Aladdin remake early in Manhattan thanks to a Broadway Facebook group I'm in.

Here's my take on it:

Will Smith was actually pretty funny as the Genie. Nobody can top Robin Williams' performance, but Will Smith definitely makes the character his own (with a short Robin tribute at one point. Won't spoil it).

Mena Massoud was great as Aladdin. He's got a pretty decent singing voice (if there was any auto tune, it wasn't obvious)

Naomi Scott killed it as Jasmine. She gets a new Let-It-Go style power ballad that was really good.

Just like suspected, Jafar was horribly miscast. He wasn't intimating at all. Iago at one point was more terrifying that Jafar.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. I originally had zero intentions of seeing the film based on the previews, but when this opportunity popped up, I decided "why not?," and I was glad I did.

If I had to give it a score out of 10, I'd say it's probably around a 7.5.

I don't want to discourage new members but when someones first post is a film review I can't help but look at them slightly askance.

They're not here to socialize, they're here to proselytize and probably to sell us their farshtunkener film site. Waste 'em, Boss Man. furious

Nytramsplace started when nytram was a member of IMDB. When IMDB was shut down a bunch of members posted "alternate" sites around the internet. Nytramsplace was added to several of those lists by previous IMDB members. Therefore people find those lists occasionally and come here to our movie board.

A slight correction. NytramsPlace was created a couple of years before IMdB shut down their message boards. I started it the first time IMdB deleted one of my posts. I had hurt a Jehovah's Witnesses feelings when I asked about magic underwear biggrin.

Of course the first year or so was just me talking to myself.

I finally got banned from IMDb in 2006 (although I came back later under another name)...and I'm pretty sure Nytram's was around well before then. I think it must have been around 2004 that I was invited to join, but I waited until it got a little bigger. I know I was a member when Katrina clocked New Orleans, which was in the summer of 2005. My sign-on date says 2007, but that might be because we've had to start from scratch a few times, for various reasons.

I didn't mind the link to that other movie site, although I didn't care for the place much and didn't click on it more than a couple of times. But this is just...well...sorta rude...no introduction...no explanation...just a review--of sorts--from out of the blue. Meh. Not what I would call getting off on the right foot...or even the left one.

What to do? That's for both of you to decide...not me... [shrug] blankstare

Charlie

Read my comment again. I'm explaining where these people recently found the link to nytramsplace and why they are posting only on the movie board.

I understand how they find their way here. That's not a problem.

But there are two different issues...one with each guy.

The first guy is trying to get hits on his board, which I understand as well. That doesn't thrill me, but I'm not the Boss Man so my opinion doesn't matter all that much. What I found when I clicked on his links was not all that interesting to me, so I shrugged and didn't go there much. Maybe two or three times. End of story.

The second guy just barged in and started yammering about a movie. Even if it was something I planned to see, that's
rather rude--and a real turn-off. So I can see why Nytram would not be happy about it. It's his call, though...not mine.

As people used to say when they were irritated; "That's a fine how-do-you-do..." In this instance...it's a lack of one. evileye

This post really implies that you don't know why they are here or how they got here so I attempted to explain.

As Charlie said, "who cares". As I said, I don't mind a good discussion of film but I don't want a two paragraph review. Want to talk about movies? Lets talk about movies.

My genra is sci-fi, horror, slasher, gore.

But I'm feeling much better now.

biggrin

As Charlie said, "who cares".

Charlie literally asked what is up with random people coming to the movie board. I explained where they were coming from. I'm not really terribly interested in movies. biggrin

Ever read 'If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor'? Bruce recounts the making the greatest low-budget horror film ever, Evil Dead. Fascinating story. We could talk about that.

You diss the greatest low-budget, schlock horror movie ever produced and you don't see the problem? If Bruce Campbell was dead he's be spinning in his grave.

I didn't diss it. It's fine for its genre. The book with the behind the scenes was much more interesting though.
