I was going to say Stuckeys pecan log rolls but after a quick search it appears both Stuckeys and the log rolls still exist.

During my families many stress filled cross-country road trips where my father absolutely refused to make restroom stops (unless of course he needed one) Stuckeys was a welcome oasis and those log rolls were ambrosia.

Your dad sounds like Eddie's dad more than a bit.  Ed told me a number of times that his father taught him, his older sister, and his three younger brothers how to swim by throwing them out of the rowboat they rented.

I'm sure that made them all feel truly loved.  disbelief

Long or short?  So far both mine are fine.  Hope I never lose the short, wish my mind would be selective about the long, retaining only the pleasant ones.

Back to disappearing things, have I mentioned irons and ironing boards?  Good riddance!!

Short. I can remember book passages and song lyrics I learned in the 60's. I have no idea what I had for breakfast yesterday morning.

Playing alongside the river and in the woods until sunset. I'd be terrified of my child was gone that long now.

We had woods to the east of the Grands' house, but they were far across the state's cornfields along Old Dover Road, and we just didn't go there.  Just-right (neither dense nor sparse) woods all along Union Hill Road.  Plenty of wild blueberries and later blackberries close to the road in the summer.

No rivers nearby, only a small creek that ran under Union Hill Road and probably was the source of the smaller creek at the bottom of the Grands' rather steep hillside that faced Old Dover Road.  I know I've mentioned more than once how Mama and I would take all the Easter eggshells up the hill, float them on the west side, scamper across the road to watch them appear on the east side, and return home in time to watch them show up along Old Dover before the little stream's faint current sent itself under the road and into the cornfields and disappeared.

At this hour, I should probably disappear, too.

Looking forward to the future.

It's just going to be more of the same. Well, actually, less of the same.
When you are poor and old, you find yourself doing less and less.

No more eating out. Or tickets to events. Or road trips. No friends. No family.
Just medical bills and vet bills and home repair bills and car repair bills.

So you stay home more and more and more. You eat, sleep, read books, sleep, watch TV, sleep, go online. And sleep.

When you're younger, it's your world. Then it becomes your city. Then your house. Then your room...your bed...

And then the Big Sleep. And a funeral. And life goes on...without you.

"REAL" SLIDERS...

All the White castle outlets in Cleveland and Akron were closed in 2014..

Now you have to drive two hours to Columbus if you want them.

Lucinda buys the frozen ones for me, but they just aren't the same.

Burger Chef, which closed in 1996.  We often went to the one on Nova Road when we lived in the Daytona area--much better than Burger King!

Erector sets. The real, all steel kits that came in red metal storage case, not the cheap plastic junk they produce now.

One of my favorite toys as a child.

Even Brownies and Girl Scouts selling cookies door-to-door.  That's a Good Thing--safer for them, even though they were accompanied by an adult, and less intrusive for customers.  Much better for everyone for them to set up stands outside supermarkets.
