As many as necessary. You must be vigilant and check DAILY for repeated hijacking attempts. Think of your computer as an airport, in which domestic terrorists are trying to sneak a bomb aboard a plane...every single day. For that is what Microsoft is trying to do. Maybe the next POTUS...or this one...needs to let the dogs out, and allow the FBI and the Department of Justice to go after these arrogant corporate motherfuckers.

As far as I am concerned, what they are doing is nothing more than domestic terrorism. You think I like staying up until three or four AM to protect my property? You think I'm happy having to bring in my computer and have it scanned and swept for shit I don't want or need or like?

These California a-holes need to be brought to their knees, and fined billions, some of which should be given back in damages...claims paid out to PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND ME.The shmoes. The little folks. Damn betcha!

...I do my best work when I'm the most pissed off...  furious furious furious

Edited to Add: I'm a lot less POed now than I was this morning. An agent from Geek Squad (Best Buy's tech-support service) was able to restore my Windows Backup and Task Scheduler, both which were completely wrecked by the attempted upgrade to Windows 10.

Best of all, it was free...because my year of  tech support has two more months left to run. So I don't have to bring my machine into the store. I will probably do it anyway, though, in midsummer, so they can do a full scan and extend my Geek Squad coverage and my anti-virus software.

It appears that I was quite lucky, apparently, because there wasn't any serious damage. And what damage there was got fixed.

But the idea of being hijacked by Microsoft, and all the resulting headaches, still annoys the crap out of me. cry

I read you loud and clear. I too was hacked on Wednesday. I turned my computer  HP Windows 8.1 and I got a big blue box covering the screen saying you must call ASAP Microsoft in order to get my computer to work properly. I could not click X to get out of the Box . I even tried to turn it of and reboot some thing I do not like to do but no no I called Microsoft and asked then what wad going on.

Mr. Tech Agent John told me 96 people had been hacking into my computer for the past 16  days every time I was on line or when my Ed would leave the computer on line. They would go to every site I was on. Apparently John told me it was good thing I have our computer password protected or it would have been hacked 24é7. He said my computer was 98% compromised therefore the big blue notice.

However with McAfee and Microsoft protection he could have my computer up and running for the total of $139.94 inclusive for a  1 year term. I said reallyÉÉ  How do I not know you via Microsoft or your livingroom did not damage my computer for the yearly fee, Well he started to laugh and  said that would be criminal and he would be charged accordingly.

I asked where he was calling from and John said Brampton, Ontario. So with that I hung up and called the Better business folks and sure enough the address he gave me was the same  and it was Microsoft. I then called him back and he cleaned up my computer and I bought the coverage for one year. Well I will pay by cheque when I get the paper work.

Still like you I was sick seriously  for two days and madder than heck about it. How the heck can we make sure they as in Microsoft is not hacking into our computersÉ Is this because I would not down load Windows 10...hmmm I wonder.

Oops É shows up instead of a question mark. If you or anyone else knows how to get my question mark to show instead of É let me know please.

BTB- Great rant Charlie and I am sorry for all of the  hassles you have been through too.

-That is very odd...I have to wonder if Microsoft was giving you a song-and-dance-routine--to get you to pay to have THEM make the repairs...after THEY broke your machine.

I have to wonder if the "96 people had been hacking into your computer for the past 16 days, every time you were online and go to every site you were on" was just telling you want you probably expected to hear. And if you were "98% compromised" you'd get the big blue notice, but that figure might have been exaggerated just to scare you. You can get that notice with a lot less damage than being hacked...viruses will do it, too.

You said you checked with the BBB and they were legitimate Microsoft folks, which was a smart move. It almost sounded like it was one of those overseas scammers...but if they fixed your system, then the price you paid was fairly cheap.

But when you asked "How do I not know you via Microsoft did not damage my computer for the yearly fee?" and he LAUGHED...well... that's not all that funny...it WOULD be criminal and they SHOULD be charged accordingly for what they have already done to so many people.

But they will never have to worry about doing time, because corporate hijackers always walk away with impunity.

Still, having to call the hijackers to undo the damage is a real pisser. The whole thing stinks!

I guess I was lucky to have Geek Squad coverage and I was also able to stop the download before everything in my system went to hell. I was able to undo some of the damage and Geek Squad did the rest.

We were both lucky...a lot of other folks have had some really serious problems.

Moving along on this--Win-10 invaded Eddie's computer a little over a week ago (maybe now he'll start shutting it off after every session).  He's been able to use it, sort of, but he doesn't like it at all.

So Thursday afternoon he told me to call the repair shop we always use to see if they could get rid of it.  "Yep," said Troy, the owner, "we've been doing a lot of that lately.  Bring it over--it'll take a couple hours and we have several ahead of yours, but it should be ready Friday morning."

He also added that they can install something that will keep Win-10 from ever making any more attempts.  I mentioned that so far I've been lucky, since I shut off my machines whenever I've finished a session.  He said lucky for now, but Microsoft is becoming increasingly arrogant about it.  It's designed to snoop more deeply so it can uncover even the slightest interests we have--bottom line, more aggressive advertising.

He said we can bring my two rigs over when we come to pick up Ed's.  Takes only a few minutes to install the blocker, and no charge for doing that.

 * Probably the GWX Control Panel Software that I researched and installed right after the hijack attempt on May 17...I did it at four in the morning. I was PISSED!

 *  Yup, it's all about the spyware and adware that they want to install on ALL our devices, and monitor everyone's habits and preferences, and allow advertisers to sell us MORE STUFF we neither need nor want.

 * Fuck you, Big Brother! Kiss my ass!

 * GWX Control Panel will block future attempts...it's readily available for downloading and simple to install from home. Damn betcha there should be no charge...it's free to anybody!

 * Sorry you were hijacked. But you should have them do a diagnostic to eliminate ALL traces of Windows 10, or you will not be able to run automatic backups of your system, which is about the same thing as having unprotected sex at a drive-in. You may end up with something you hadn't planned on, and don't like (losing everything, including all your files).

We trust Troy and his employees, God knows we've been dealing with them for quite a few years, and they're only a little more than a mile from the house.

For instance, Ed first said to have one of them make a house call, but Troy pointed out that getting rid of Win-10 here at home would cost $250 (two hours at $125 each), but if we brought Ed's machine to the shop, it would be only $85.

Hey, I know once MS sells enough new computers with Win-10 the only option, it'll come out with yet another operating system.

If anything's worthy of a Congressional investigaton, MS sure is.

Are we talking AdBlocker and/or Adblocker Plus?

It is amazing the difference they makes. The chap installed it on my new (well, newer than Old Faithful of Windows XP) computer and I have only just realised how much time I spent deleting money making offers from kind Nigerians who only wanted my bank details to make me rich.

I think I am going to look into this computer lark, it seems to be fun.

AdBlocker will only block ads, hence the name. It will NOT stop Microsoft's attempted...and successful...hijackings of your computer. You need something specifically designed to FIGHT OFF invasions by Microsoft, and the unwanted installation of Windows 10.

It is called GWX Control Panel...the GWX stands for Get Windows X (10). It saved my ass three weeks ago. And it will save yours.

For chrissakes, people, download and install GWX Control Panel...before it's too late!

I predict that the next mass shooting will be in Silicon Valley...at the headquarters of Microsoft.

Wow, was it really two years ago? Already?

Time doesn't march anymore...it runs. Faster and faster every day.

My boy is talking about going over to linux, which I always thought was that kid in peanuts that played the toy piano, but apparently not. Anyway, he has enlisted the grandson and ex son in law and all three of them are talking Nerdish fit to bust and I am getting pissed off. I can put up with a few bugs but those guys are getting on my bosoms.

I dumped Microsoft in 2013 and got a MacBook Pro. I'm not thrilled with Apple shenanigans either, but this machine has been reliable, easy to use, and still going strong, even the battery. I expect it will do me for quite some time yet. When I do replace, it will likely be with a new MacBook Pro.
